In the Shadow

I wrote this poem today because I have a friend in the hospital with cancer.

He is very kind and very strong but he is also human.

Rather than a hallmark card I wrote this.
I hope you all enjoy it and share it with anyone suffering with illness in their life.

It was easy for me to write because I have a disability and can somewhat identify with the mental suffering that happens when you lose control of your body.

In the Shadow

Some days I find my way
Love surrounds me
and I feel safe

Yet, when all is quiet
When all is still
I see myself
for what my reality truly is.

I shudder with fear
I renounce all
I am angry
I argue with Him
Resentment is my sin.
I confess.

Some nights
when this burden awakens me
I am expecting this anger
and fear
It is not there

Instead I feel a warmth
A blanket of love
As a mother to her son
I am safe
A hand on my shoulder
This tells me I am okay

Although my body is defying me
And my will seems all but gone
Again, the hand on my shoulder
The warmth
The love

Every night is different
At times
I have the strength
to see the truth
That I am not alone
That regardless of the outcome
I am sunshine in His eyes
I am who He meant for me to be
I always have walked in
His shadow

I am loved
I am protected
I am afraid
I am me

About goplayintraffic

My Blog, which began as a mommy blog and turned into a writing website,, is the product of my years of being home with my children and trying to find ways to keep myself sane. I have always had this feeling, coming from a single mother, that I have to contribute financially and that I have to be able to take care of myself and my children. having been married, being a NYC school teacher, having four children, living in Newtown, CT and trying to find a way to get through each day with a smile has always been something I've strived for. My stories, articles and poems will do a lot of things but mostly make you feel. I think that is what is so wonderful about having the ability to write. I have been given the gift of taking my emotions and transferring them to written word. Once that is done, I can share those words with others who may feel better, maybe just for a moment, but better nonetheless having read my words. I am glad you are here and hope you will stay:)

I wrote this poem for my friend who was sick with cancer. Sadly, he passed away this morning. I wanted to re-post it as a tribute to him. He was a wonderful man. Very caring, considerate and gave of himself freely. I ask that everyone out there who believes in the afterlife pray for him. I also believe he’s already there.
