New York City, A Poem

New York city is something everyone should behold.

Walk down city streets
See the young and the old
See cabbies and cops
Firemen and some teachers
Entertainers and scammers
Walkers and preachers

Look up at the skyline and
it all seems so clear
No wonder so many flocked to it’s piers.

It’s really amazing to look back
and hear stories.
Of ancestors, friends all their tears
and their glories.

Was it once that i stepped off the
rim of a ship
And wondered how far I would get
Would I live.

No… not the me I see in mirrors today
It was grandmas and uncles
who paved the clear way
Sure other places seem better,
make a left not a right.

There are taxes and prices,
so what’s all the hype?

NYC was clearly a beacon you see.
If it wasn’t for them then no you
and no me.
No sisters, no brothers,
no broadway shows.
No museums and statues,
No hot dogs to go.

And although it just seems
like just a lot of hot wind.
When grandmas and grandpas
tell their stories to kids.
They are passing on dreams
that not long ago were.

They’re giving the gift
of their lifetimes and though
It is not in an email
but words from their lips.
I cherish each breath
and I sit here and grin.

Connecticut’s nice
and jersey has shores,
But NYC has something
that is just quite more.

It has character, history
and boats that go round.
It has sadness, defeat
and the big turn around.

But where else in this country
could anyone land
And create a new life
with just dreams and a plan.

It hasn’t been hard
for me or my brothers
Who walked into life
with no run duck and cover

But if we can sit and
just look and just listen.
We’ll finally understand
this transient tradition.

NYC, I thank you
for being down there.
Waiting for me
when I can just grab a cab
And reminding me that
your not just bricks and some mortar.
You are what we’ll pass on
to our sons and our daughters.
And grandsons and grand girls
and all those alike.

You are a lot more than just
lots of money and hype!

About goplayintraffic

My Blog, which began as a mommy blog and turned into a writing website,, is the product of my years of being home with my children and trying to find ways to keep myself sane. I have always had this feeling, coming from a single mother, that I have to contribute financially and that I have to be able to take care of myself and my children. having been married, being a NYC school teacher, having four children, living in Newtown, CT and trying to find a way to get through each day with a smile has always been something I've strived for. My stories, articles and poems will do a lot of things but mostly make you feel. I think that is what is so wonderful about having the ability to write. I have been given the gift of taking my emotions and transferring them to written word. Once that is done, I can share those words with others who may feel better, maybe just for a moment, but better nonetheless having read my words. I am glad you are here and hope you will stay:)
