The Man on the Corner, But for the grace of God go I!

When I lay in my bed, especially on very cold nights, I always think of so many who are on the streets, despairing, freezing, hungry and empty.  I thank God twice on those nights and say that oh so special prayer, But for the Grace of God Go I!

The Man on the Corner

As I walked sown the street
To my prosperous job.
I noticed the man
that I’d seen there before.

Clearly broken and hungry,
dirty and needy.
He wears a big smile and
always greets me so sweetly.

On this morning
I started to think how to help.
This man who was so
clearly lacking himself.

I could give him some food.
Clean him up,
Get a suit.
I could teach him my trade.
Help him work for his loot.

It could be a new life.
I would welcome him home.
Show him a family,
that’s loving and warm.

Maybe help him
to figure what in life went so wrong.
Then I’d get him some help
for his clear mental scorn.

He would heal all his woes.
He would work and have space.
To be independent
and not live in this place.

What’s that?
Oh, my wrist watch says
that its now five past nine.
I’ll just wave to him now,
I can help him next time.

About goplayintraffic

My Blog, which began as a mommy blog and turned into a writing website, www.write2survive.com, is the product of my years of being home with my children and trying to find ways to keep myself sane. I have always had this feeling, coming from a single mother, that I have to contribute financially and that I have to be able to take care of myself and my children. having been married, being a NYC school teacher, having four children, living in Newtown, CT and trying to find a way to get through each day with a smile has always been something I've strived for. My stories, articles and poems will do a lot of things but mostly make you feel. I think that is what is so wonderful about having the ability to write. I have been given the gift of taking my emotions and transferring them to written word. Once that is done, I can share those words with others who may feel better, maybe just for a moment, but better nonetheless having read my words. I am glad you are here and hope you will stay:)
