Bully in the Sky

In the morning
I sit in the back
Sneak a smoke

I watch all
The birds in my yard
As they float

Most propped
Peacefully calling
Each other
From branches

Keeping watch
On their kin
Finding food
For the masses

One morning
While sitting
In my secret
Smoke spot

A scene from
Wild kingdom
Began to play out

One of my bird friends
While making his rounds
Was suddenly
Blind sided by a hawk
Taken down

I jumped to my feet
But what could I do
This was nature
Darwin‘s theory
I learned it in school

Was not interfering
the right thing to do
As this small bird
Fought wildly
To be freed from
His doom

Pinned down on his back
Screeching wildly at hawk
Who’s clearly the bully
In my backwoods schoolyard

I clapped twice
Giving my friend
The brief intervention
As hawk looked suspicious
Despite his intention

That’s all my friend needed
He jumped to his feet
Spread his wings widely
And took off
Passing me

Hawk squawked
His displeasure
As I stood proudly watching
He flew away losing
This battle of Darwin

I stepped out
to search for my friend
Clearly injured
But found nothing
No traces
Nowhere did he linger

As I stood in Amazement
At what I encountered
Awe struck
Somewhat changed
For I realized the boundaries

A birds life can have
As predators loom
Even my backyard
Can be trappings of doom

So the next time I’m out there
Enjoying my morning
Watching bird friends
chirp loudly
Basking in winged glory

I will keep
watchful Eyes
Looking high
In the trees
Knowing Darwin
And hawks
Have nothing on me

About goplayintraffic

My Blog, which began as a mommy blog and turned into a writing website, www.write2survive.com, is the product of my years of being home with my children and trying to find ways to keep myself sane. I have always had this feeling, coming from a single mother, that I have to contribute financially and that I have to be able to take care of myself and my children. having been married, being a NYC school teacher, having four children, living in Newtown, CT and trying to find a way to get through each day with a smile has always been something I've strived for. My stories, articles and poems will do a lot of things but mostly make you feel. I think that is what is so wonderful about having the ability to write. I have been given the gift of taking my emotions and transferring them to written word. Once that is done, I can share those words with others who may feel better, maybe just for a moment, but better nonetheless having read my words. I am glad you are here and hope you will stay:)
