Retreat with Sandy Hook victims mother!

I spent the day at a retreat at St. Rose of Lima Church‘s Spiritual Journey Group. The main speaker was Jenny Hubbard, mother of Catherine Hubbard. Catherine was a victim in the Sandy Hook School Tragedy on 12/14.

The retreats theme was “The Seasons” in our lives. While I won’t go into detail about that, I wanted to share Jenny’s message.

As I sat and listened to this awe inspiring woman speak of her total acceptance that it was Gods will for her daughter to go to him, I was numb.

She spoke of how God prepared her for that moment in her life by bringing her closer to Him through other circumstances that happened to her and her family prior to the tragedy.

She described how she originally was a professional working woman. Company car, lots of money and things, etc. Her son was born with a pin sized hole in his heart, and was in the intensive care for the first 25 days of his life. The two hour car ride to the hospital every day taught her how to pray.

Prior to his coming home from the hospital, she had every intention of going back to work but in an instant decided she would stay home.

This meant a drastic change in lifestyle for her and her husband. It meant walking away from all of their “stuff” and having faith.

She then explained how they moved to Newtown and she got the opportunity to spend 6 years with her daughter, Catherine.

Here’s the awe part. She said that God set things in place, sons health condition, growing closer through praying, that prepared her for her daughters tragic death.

When asked what she wanted from people who felt they had to do something, she said, “Pray.”

Just pray. Can it be that easy?

I thanked for her strength as a mother and her message. I told her that in light of the changing times and a new Pope in the Vatican, that this may be an opportunity to bring people back to God. Her story has changed me.

Next, I am going to post her reflection. She gave me permission to post her reflection and put her name on it.

I’m exhausted.

Thanks.

About goplayintraffic

My Blog, which began as a mommy blog and turned into a writing website, www.write2survive.com, is the product of my years of being home with my children and trying to find ways to keep myself sane. I have always had this feeling, coming from a single mother, that I have to contribute financially and that I have to be able to take care of myself and my children. having been married, being a NYC school teacher, having four children, living in Newtown, CT and trying to find a way to get through each day with a smile has always been something I've strived for. My stories, articles and poems will do a lot of things but mostly make you feel. I think that is what is so wonderful about having the ability to write. I have been given the gift of taking my emotions and transferring them to written word. Once that is done, I can share those words with others who may feel better, maybe just for a moment, but better nonetheless having read my words. I am glad you are here and hope you will stay:)
